Civil War Rifles

The Civil War was a catastrophic event in American history in terms of casualties, with the Civil War rifles and fighting at close quarters being primary factors in the high number of casualties sustained. There were a variety of rifles used in the Civil War, with collectors throughout the country preserving fine examples of most of the Civil War rifles.

Among the many standouts in the category of Civil War rifles is the Spencer rifle that was used by northern troops. This rifle used some of the design improvements of the era, including an all metal cartridge with its own built in primer, to produce a rifle that was superior to the weapons typically used by the southern military. Using the Spencer rifle allowed the northern fighters to fire up to 14 rounds per minute.

The Starr carbine rifle was another Northern weapon. This is one of the Civil War rifles known specifically for its astonishingly low misfire rate and high shooting accuracy. Benchrest rifles were the sniper rifle of the Civil War. Accurate up to 1800 yards away from the target, in part due to its rudimentary telescopic sights, that offered 4x magnification, these rifles were assigned to the very best shooters.

The Whitworth rifle was used primarily by Southern troops. Made in England, it was known for its exceptional accuracy and was one of the best long-range weapons to be used by either side. It also had telescopic sights and a distance range of 1800 yards. It was also notable for the shape of its bullets, which came to be called bolts by both the north and the south, due to their distinctive six-sided shape.

The innovations in gun design that occurred in the years just before the start of the Civil War made Civil War rifles more deadly than those used in previous wars. Many of these weapons can be seen in beautifully preserved and restored condition at museums and in the private collections of enthusiasts of Civil War rifles.
