National Rifle Association
The National Rifle Association has a long history in the United States, beginning with its establishment in the years following the civil war. It continues to play an important role today in both the protection of our second amendment right to bear arms and in the promotion of the knowledge and abilities necessary to do so safely.
The National Rifle Association came into being in the year 1871 through the efforts of Colonel William C. Church and General George Wingate, two northern veterans of the civil war. Both shared concerns that the marksmanship of the men in the military was simply not the best that it could be. Perhaps influenced in part by cultural shifts brought about by the spread of the scientific precision popularized by the industrial revolution and mass production, the aim of the organization was to improve firearm skills by taking a scientific and precise approach to their development.
Thus, from its very inception, education concerning the proper use of firearms and the responsibilities associated with gun ownership and usage has been a part of the fundamental goals and purposes of the National Rifle Association. The National Rifle Association has always been involved in youth programs that, in addition to helping to develop skills, also seek to promote gun safety.
In addition to those important activities, the National Rifle Association engages in political activities for the purpose of ensuring that legislators remember the Constitution, which grants the people the right to bear arms. They track legislation designed to limit this essential right of the people and lobby vociferously on behalf of the second amendment.
The National Rifle Association is an important part of American history and culture. However, it is also an essential part of the present, working towards the same important goals that it always has, in addition to its efforts at protecting one of the most fundamental rights of the American citizen.
