Night Vision Scopes

There are quite a few different types of night vision scopes on the market, as well as a broad price range. It is important to know a bit about the different types of night vision scopes available, as different types use different technologies that significantly impact the degree of effectiveness. Use this knowledge to choose the best night vision scope for your night vision needs.

Determining your night vision needs is an important first step. What it means is to consider the degree of darkness you'll be using your scope in. In general, the closer to pure darkness you are trying to function in, the more you'll pay, as the technologies become a bit more complex as the degree of darkness increases.

The less expensive night vision scopes tend to use the older technologies – night vision equipment has been around for more than a few decades -- often referred to as generation 0, which is the original technology, and generation 1, the improvements that followed the original.

The original technology, or generation 0, used a system that projected an active infrared beam that bounced off of objects and returned to the lens. Generation 1, which followed O, shifted away from active infrared, which was easily detectable, to a system that used passive infrared beams and the light of the stars and the moon. Meaning these night vision scopes still require a certain degree of light to function.

Generation 3 and 4 systems are more technologically complex, and thus tend to be more expensive. These systems are favored by law enforcement and the military for night vision scopes, as they do not require the same amount of light to provide sufficient viewing for desired tasks.

The best way to buy night vision scopes that meet your needs and expectations is to be sure to do sufficient research ahead of time. That will help you to determine what you need and to have the proper expectations of the equipment you do choose.
