Rifle Scopes

Rifle scopes, the commonly used term for the telescopic sights used on rifles, have been around for a long time. Since their invention at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of their commercial production in the early 20th century, rifle scopes have undergone many improvements and benefited from a variety of technological advancements. Rifle scopes have become a very important accuracy tool to both professional and recreational rifle users.

While many tinkerers and inventers worked towards the successful creation of rifle scopes, it is August Fiedler that is credited with the invention of the first functional rifle scope in 1880, while serving the German Prince Reuss. Karl Robert Kahles, in 1898, also came up with a working design for rifle scopes and went on to become one of the first commercial producers of rifle scopes, creating a manufacturing company that continued to be family owned until 1974.

Rifle scopes, in that early era, used the basic technology of the telescope to provide a better view of the target which, naturally, served to increase accuracy in shooting. As time and technologies progressed, a variety of rifle scopes became available. Among these are night vision rifle scopes, which allows the shooter better vision in the dark, helping increase nighttime shooting accuracy.

Since their arrival, rifle scopes have been an important tool to those who shoot rifles professionally, such as those serving in the military, as well as for those who shoot recreationally, including hunters and competitive sportsmen. Today, there are numerous types of rifle scopes available, each type created for a specific shooting purpose or need.

Rifle scopes have come a long way since those early designs that were first marketed. The rifle scopes of today offer a wide variety of ranges and are designed to meet a broad range of shooting needs. With a bit of time spent in researching the capabilities of the different types of rifle scopes, the rifle scope buyer will be sure to get one that fits his specific needs.
