Shooting Games

Shooting games have a long history, as do gun shooting clubs and groups themselves. As with many games of skill, gun shooting games arose out of practical necessity. These types of games still remain a popular form of entertainment throughout the world, despite the changes in day-to-day life that most societies have experienced as they've progressed into the modern era.

Throughout human history, the primary purposes of shooting had to do with survival – protection or obtaining food. Thus, shooting games, from those in earliest times that used rocks to later eras that used arrows to the more modern era of gunpowder and bullets, were an important means of developing valuable skills. The earliest gun clubs began to appear as the availability guns and gunpowder began to increase, with such associations seen as early as the 1300's in Europe.

Shooting games became internationally popular, as evidenced by the inclusion of shooting in the Olympic games of 1896, a year that also marked the revival in modern times of the ancient tradition of Olympic games themselves. In those first Olympic games of the modern era, there were five separate shooting events, two using rifles and three using pistols.

Today, shooting games continue to enjoy international popularity. Some of the shooting games played today have been popular among gun enthusiasts for hundreds of years. Among these are trap shooting and skeet shooting, in which shooters fire at clay pigeons. In the earliest era of this sport, live birds were used. That practice began to fade out in sports competitions at the turn of the twentieth century, when pigeons of clay were substituted.

Modern technologies have brought shooting games to a variety of mediums. In addition to the traditional shooting games that use real guns, there are paintball shooting games, in which balls of paint, rather than bullets, are used. Virtual or video shooting games became popular as soon as technology was able to support such entertainment. That shooting games of all sorts continue to have meaning beyond pure entertainment value is demonstrated by the special video shooting games that are used in military training.

Shooting games are an important means of skill development, and have been so almost since humans began to shoot. In addition to their role in developing skills, shooting games continue to be enjoyed as popular entertainment, drawing international participants and audiences. Modern technologies have played a role in making shooting games, in a variety of mediums, popular on a broader scale than ever before.
