Winchester Rifles
Winchester rifles hold a special place in American history and legend. From the very beginning of the company, in 1866, the Winchester name has been – and continues to be – associated with quality and dependability. Winchester rifles are known throughout the world.
When Oliver Fisher Winchester began the Winchester Repeating Arms Company just after the Civil War, he was already experienced in the business, having been a part of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, which then changed to the New Haven Arms Company before its reincarnation as the gun manufacturing company that was to bear his name even into today. Winchester rifles took the nation by storm, becoming one of the most common firearms of the west, and soon thereafter the nation.
Part of the early success of Winchester rifles had to do with the Winchester Repeating Arms Company's acquisition of the services of one of America's best known and most innovative gun designers, John Moses Browning. Browning designed several of the early Winchester rifles that have come to be known as firearms masterpieces. Among these are the Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Repeating Rifle, the Model 1887 Lever Action Repeating Shotgun, the Model 1897 Pump Action Shotgun, the Model 1894 Lever Action Repeating Rifle, and the Model 1895 Lever Action Repeating Rifle.
Winchester rifles were affordable and mass produced, which led to them being among the most common rifle used by the average person. However, it was the quality and dependability of Winchester rifles that made them the preferred firearm of many of the best known names in competitive shooting, such as Annie Oakley and Buffalo Bill, that secured the place of Winchester rifles in legend.
Winchester rifles are deeply entwined with the history and culture of the American west, as well as that of the nation itself. Owning a Winchester rifle allows one to hold a bit of American history and legend right in one's hands and marvel at the progress of a nation.
